CHAPTER 5

Finally, after a couple of years blanketing Oklahoma and Texas for a job that could afford a move close to home, a couple of job openings came up in Oklahoma.  And one really stuck out.  A Country music station is perfect, it’s a family friendly format that would be exactly what we were looking for with what we were about to embark on.  101.9 The Twister in Oklahoma City has that family atmosphere and it was right in the middle of all of our relatives.  Plus, the crew that works there is exceptionally nice and make it a great place to work.

OKC ARRIVAL 04-37

We found a house right away and got settled in within the first month of being in Oklahoma City. Next was all the talk about when Lizeth and my parents were going to have some grandchildren with which to play.  Lizeth and I had discussed in the past how perfect it would be to have the news just in time to spring on everyone at the Thanksgiving dinner table. And wouldn’t you know it timed out perfectly!!! The radio station had sent me to Nashville to interview all the artists for the CMA awards and we believe that is when the magic happened.

CMA 04-0640 (SHANIA)

I was telling all of the artists that came to the ‘04 CMA’s about how we were getting ready to start a family, especially those who had families themselves. Lizeth got to tag along as my producer and we met some of the biggest names and historical names in the industry such as:  Shania Twain, Charlie Daniels, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland, Big & Rich, Joe Diffie, Chris Cagle and many others. They all wished us good luck and little did they know that as soon as we got back from the trip, Lizeth came up pregnant!

This is when this chapter has really taken off at the speed of light.  First off, we had to hold the news in for a week and a half until Thanksgiving.  But it was sooooo worth it! We went around the Thanksgiving Table everyone telling what we were thankful for. I mentioned that we were thankful to get back to Oklahoma with a good job and I was here able to be around family. We were also very thankful for the timing, we made it back just in time to be at the hospital while my father had a triple bypass surgery. Lizeth was up next and she said: “I am thankful that we are going to have a baby soon.”  Everyone at the table started balling and congratulating us.  Then after everyone calmed down, poor Chandra who was next to speak said: “Well, I can’t top that!”  So far this story has been a fairy tale. I looked at Lizeth in the kitchen one day and she said to me: “Look, our little baby is about the size of a bean right now!” I told her: “I KNOW! And you know what beans make you do? We should call it our little bean-fart!”

The doctor’s visits were exciting... we didn’t know if it was a boy or a girl!!!  Until that incredible moment that we got to see it in the ultrasound and have the doctor explain to us that we were going to have a little girl!!!  Lizeth was thrilled that she was going to have her little ballerina!!!  I was just excited that we were going to have a baby, it didn’t matter... boy, girl, I want one of both and I was just thrilled!  At this point we had already decided on a name. We wanted to name her Donna Lizeth (after my mother who was very anxious to see a grand daughter before she passed away of Cancer back in 2001 and obviously Lizeth after the baby’s mother)

So during the pregnancy, we had a bunch of fun on the radio talking about bad baby nicknames (little bean fart), weirdest place you have ever given birth (believe it or not, the most popular was in the toilet!), pregnancy cravings, whether to spank kids or not.  We also had some fun making Donna dance in Lizeth’s stomach. One time we put a bowl of jello on Lizeth’s stomach to watch Donna make it wiggle, make it jiggle from inside the stomach.  And we took the child birthing classes and breastfeeding classes to get as prepared as possible for little Donna to be brought into the world.

Needless to say, Dr. Nanda did a fantastic job delivering Donna into the world and as she laid her on Lizeth’s stomach, my stomach fell to the floor. .

As any father knows, I have never felt an emotion with this depth or magnitude.  As they took Donna to get cleaned up. I didn’t want to leave Lizeth alone. It just didn’t seem fair that she had worked all this time holding our daughter in her stomach for months, morning sickness and all the pains, not to mention delivery for me to get all the pleasure of seeing Donna clearly before she had a chance to spend time with her. But just as she was tough as nails through the whole ordeal, she told me to go hold our daughter

We were truly on our way to a different life now. I was one of the proudest fathers out there, and Lizeth was excited to be a new mommy. We have already started this chapter of memories... Taking Donna home from the hospital, learning how to feed a baby, changing diapers 4-5 times just when she eats, we took her to her first concert to see Phil Vassar at 6 days old and introduced her onstage! There were many more memories to make with our daughter and hopefully one day our son... but that is another chapter to be written later...

Take a look though the pictures of Donna in our photo gallery, but this one is my favorite to date. Donna was 4 days old and she was lifting her head up and looking around while lying on my chest...
